Dr. Jonathan Doerr, Senior Vice President of Venture Building at Disrupt.com and part of MENA Fintech Association’s network, joins FinTech TV’s Raghda Ibraheem on Wall Street to MENA to unpack a venture-building model that deliberately reverses the usual funding sequence.
Rather than raising outside capital first, Disrupt.com puts in its own capital and its own go-to-market and technology teams, operating out of Pakistan and Dubai, before external investors are brought in. Ventures move through four stages, ideation, validation, MVP and acceleration, and Doerr’s diagnosis of where most startups fail is precise: rarely in the build, almost always in skipping the validation that confirms product-market fit before racing to an MVP.
The capital behind this approach traces back to Cloudways, the cloud hosting platform Disrupt.com’s founders built and sold to DigitalOcean for $350 million in 2022, the largest tech exit tied to Pakistan’s startup sector. That exit, alongside companies including PureVPN and the UAE fitness brand Squatwolf, funded the clusters Disrupt.com builds in today, cybersecurity, B2B SaaS and blockchain via ZigChain, taking its reported portfolio value to $850 million.
Doerr also details two live fintech ventures: Rich, which he says is working to tokenise natural assets using an in-house AI tool that has cut asset due diligence from three months to a few hours, and Zamanat, a Sharia-compliant tokenised private credit fund targeting up to $100 million to help close the GCC’s estimated $250 billion SME financing gap.
His closing point: every venture Disrupt.com builds now starts AI-native, not retrofitted later, and founders walking in today need to ideate and validate faster, and more flexibly, than founders did before.
Topics discussed: reverse-order venture building, the Cloudways exit, Disrupt.com’s ideation-to-acceleration model, why startups actually fail, natural asset tokenisation, Zamanat and the GCC SME financing gap, AI-native venture building.
