22 Markets, 22 Rulebooks: Nameer Khan on Why the MENA Exit Gap Isn’t a Weakness | FinTech TV x MFTA

Nameer Khan, Founder and Chairman of the MENA Fintech Association, joins FinTech TV’s Raghda Ibraheem live from Money20/20 Middle East in Riyadh, on the opening day of the event, to unpack the forces shaping fintech across the region: Saudi Arabia’s momentum, market fragmentation, and where consolidation is actually happening.

Khan’s central argument reframes one of the region’s most debated numbers. MENA’s median exit timeline runs at roughly six years, and the comparison typically used to criticise that figure, against the US and European markets, is the wrong one. Those markets operate under a single regulatory environment. MENA spans 22 markets and 22 rulebooks, and a fintech scaling regionally is building liquidity across all 22, not one. Six years is not underperformance. It is the cost of solving a genuinely complex, multi-jurisdiction problem.

He also names where he sees the next wave of consolidation forming: not consumer fintech IPOs, but infrastructure, pointing to PayTabs’ acquisition of Amazon Payment Services’ MENA operations as the clearest example of an acquisition play building scale across markets rather than waiting on organic growth. On banks and fintechs, his framing is a partnership case rather than a competitive one, arguing that regulatory trust and speed to market are complementary strengths, not opposing ones.

Khan is also convening an MFTA roundtable on the future of finance at Money20/20 this week, ahead of a Wednesday panel on the region’s structural advantage.

Topics discussed: the MENA exit gap reframed, Saudi Arabia’s role in regional fintech momentum, infrastructure consolidation and M&A, the PayTabs and Amazon Payment Services deal, bank and fintech partnership models, MFTA’s Money20/20 programming.
