Sophie Guibaud, independent non-executive director and board advisor across fintech, payments and AI governance, Co-Chair of MENA Fintech Association’s Saudi Chapter, and co-author of Embedded Finance: When Payments Become An Experience, returns to FinTech TV’s Wall Street to MENA on Day 2 of Money20/20 Middle East 2026 in Riyadh, where she is moderating two sessions on the event’s executive stage: The Platform Winners: Decoding the Future of Financial Distribution, and The New Geography of Payments: Where Growth Happens Next.
Guibaud’s sharpest reframe answers the question the whole embedded finance industry is asking: who wins distribution, banks, fintechs or big tech platforms? Her answer is a win-win. Platforms face the customer, but banks and financial institutions sit behind them, supplying the regulation, capital, infrastructure and access to payment rails that make distribution possible in the first place. The 2012 European debate about fintechs replacing banks, she argues, has already been settled by embedded finance: banks are the enablers, not the incumbents being disrupted.
She points to Day 1’s Platform Winners panel, featuring the CEOs of Tabby, HungerStation and D360 Bank, as proof the model is already working: Tabby’s own research found that 70% of its customers now accept BNPL loans at checkout across everything they buy. The next test for fintechs, she says, is defensibility, not distribution.
On where the next wave of payment growth comes from, Guibaud points to Brazil’s Pix and India’s UPI as proof that instant payments, delivered properly, drive nationwide adoption, and argues plenty of markets are still waiting for that same leap. She also weighs in on Tabby’s newly closed $233 million raise at a $6.5 billion valuation, reading it as confirmation that serious capital is available, but only for fintechs solving real problems with a genuine path to profitability, not fintech for its own sake.
Topics discussed: embedded finance and distribution defensibility, banks as enablers versus disruption narratives, BNPL adoption at checkout, instant payments and the Pix/UPI playbook, Tabby’s $233 million raise, where global capital is flowing in fintech.
