Dubai Future Finance Week Highlights Fintech Growth and Innovation

The Dubai Future Finance Week has commenced, featuring the Dubai Fintech Summit as its main event. This inaugural edition has already surpassed its planned scale, with over 100 events, 12 signature forums, and 14 stages across the city, hosting more than 1,000 speakers under the theme Finance Reimagined.

His Excellency Essa Kazim, Governor of DIFC, initiated the summit by highlighting Dubai's ascent and its ongoing ambitions. He presented figures demonstrating the centre's momentum, including the growth of its AI, fintech, and innovation community by nearly 500 firms over the past year.

DIFC Academy Expansion

A significant announcement was made regarding the DIFC Academy, which is set to expand tenfold to 370,000 square feet in the new Zabeel District. This expansion will enable the academy to accommodate more than 50,000 learners annually from 2030, marking a substantial investment in the development of talent for the next generation of finance in Dubai.

His Excellency Arif Amiri, Chief Executive of DIFC Authority, described this move as an investment in the people who will shape the future of finance from Dubai. The DIFC has been quoting its recent ranking in the Global Financial Centres Index, where industry professionals ranked Dubai first in the world for fintech.

Corridors and Stablecoins

The concept of corridors was a prominent theme throughout the plenary programme, with discussions involving chief executives from various banks, including Mambu, Network International, SC Ventures, and Van Lanschot Kempen, as well as ministers from India, the UAE, and other countries.

Jason Moo, Chief Executive of Bank of Singapore, presented a clear case for corridors, stating that as the world divides between the US and China, clients are seeking neutral grounds for their financial transactions. He views Singapore and Dubai as safe harbours for these transactions, rather than rivals, and highlighted the movement of capital between these hubs.

Moo also discussed the practical applications of AI in banking, citing Bank of Singapore's use of AI agents for KYC processes, which has reduced account opening times from around six weeks to 15 days. He warned about the risks associated with clients building their own dashboards without adequate cybersecurity measures.

Private Wealth and Digital Dirham

J.P. Morgan Private Bank has established a new branch in DIFC, regulated by the DFSA, to serve clients across the UAE and the wider region. The firm has utilized DIFC as its regional base for corporate and investment banking for two decades and has significantly expanded its private banking team in Dubai over the past year.

Paul Kayrouz, Chief Fintech Officer at the Central Bank of the UAE, explained the country's approach to digital money, including the issuance of a comprehensive stablecoin regulation in 2024. Four banks are now licensed to issue dirham stablecoins, each with distinct use cases, and the central bank is working on introducing a digital dirham.

The central bank aims to offer both stablecoins and the digital dirham as options, allowing the market to decide which is more suitable for different payment scenarios. The digital dirham is envisioned as sovereign money, issued and backed by the central bank, primarily for settlement between banks across borders.

Merchant Perspective

Harry Gill, Chairman of Pay10, expressed a more cautious view on the adoption of stablecoins, stating that it is not a priority for their QR code payments until regulation allows it. He believes that consumers are unlikely to adopt stablecoins soon, given the existing dirham account infrastructure.

The focus for Pay10 remains on serving small merchants, with instant settlement and lower costs being the primary concerns. Emirates NBD has also launched a programme to support Emirati-owned SMEs in adopting AI, in partnership with DIFC Innovation Hub, AWS, and Visa.
