Absa Expands to Dubai to Boost Africa-GCC Trade

A modern bank branch in Dubai with clients and staff engaged in financial transactions

The Absa Group has established a presence in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), marking a significant milestone in its efforts to facilitate trade and investment between the Gulf and Africa. This strategic move is expected to bolster the bank’s position as a key player in the region’s financial landscape. By setting up an office in Dubai, Absa aims to provide financial services to Gulf-based businesses and investors looking to explore opportunities in Africa.

What the licence covers

The new office, operating as Absa Bank Limited (DIFC Branch), has been granted a Category 4 licence by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA). This licence enables the branch to arrange investment deals, advise on financial products, and arrange and advise on credit for eligible clients. The licence also allows Absa to provide a range of financial services to its clients, including investment advice and credit arrangements.

Why it matters for GCC businesses

According to Cheryl Buss, Chief Executive Officer at Absa International, the decision to establish a presence in Dubai reflects the increasing significance of the Gulf in Africa’s trade and investment landscape. The region’s strategic location, which links the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, makes it an ideal hub for Absa’s operations. Clinton Clarke, Senior Executive Officer at Absa Bank Limited (DIFC Branch), noted that the challenge for Gulf-based businesses and investors looking to invest in Africa is to turn an opportunity into a viable business decision. He added that having a presence in Dubai enables the team to work closely with clients and understand their target markets and sectors.

Absa’s expansion into Dubai is part of its international corridor strategy, which aims to link global capital and trade with African markets. The bank has identified several sectors of interest, including infrastructure, energy, logistics, agriculture, and fast-moving consumer goods.

The bank’s presence in Dubai is expected to enhance its ability to support trade and investment flows between the Gulf and Africa. With its Category 4 licence and strategic location, Absa is well-positioned to provide a range of financial services to Gulf-based businesses and investors.
